5 Steps to Clear Your Space and Welcome Samhain
Share
The end of the harvest is nearly here, the year is turning, and the darker evenings invite many of us to draw inward. Samhain is also a time associated with the thinning of the veil, making it a season that turns our attention toward remembrance and reflection.
Samhain, celebrated from the evening of 31 October into 1 November, is the third and final harvest and the traditional turning of the year. Just as in the spring we do our spring clearning, this time of year our homes often need a bit of a spiritual reset to shake off the year's accumulated clutter and make space for a quieter season so that we can settle down and retreat as nature also begins to do.
However, this doesn't need to be a massive chore or loads of work. Here are five simple steps to clear the energy of your home and welcome the turning of the year.
1. Open the Windows and Clear the Clutter
Before we get into the more ritual side of things, start with the basics.
Start by opening every window in your house. While you do that, give your main living areas a quick sweep. You don’t have to do a deep scrub (unless you want to!), but clearing away physical clutter often helps create a better sense of mental and spiritual space too. This also allows any old energy to leave through the window, making space for welcoming the new.
Tip: As you tidy, imagine you are moving old, tired energy out through the open windows.
2. Smoke Cleansing with Intent
Once the room is prepared, it’s time for some spiritual herbs. Smoke cleansing is a long-standing ritual used to clear a space before meditation, spellwork, prayer, or seasonal rites.

For a soft, sweet, and grounding scent, we love using Palo Santo. It has a warm, woody aroma and a long history in spiritual practice, where it is often used to reset the energy of a room. Just light one end, let it burn for a few seconds, blow it out, and walk through your rooms, letting the smoke drift into the corners while you focus on the atmosphere and intention you want to create.
If you’re looking for something a bit more intense to really reset the feel of a room, try our Organic Resin. Remember to always use a heat-proof container, as charcoal gets very hot!
3. Light a Ritual Candle to Mark the Turning
Light plays an important part in seasonal ritual, so it’s a lovely time to bring fire into your practice. Using ritual candles helps focus your energy and sets a specific atmosphere for each room.

Our Essential oil candles are chosen for their wax, wick, scent, and handcrafted feel, making them the perfect choice for seasonal rituals and quiet evening routines.
For Samhain, I'd suggest warming scents like cinnamon, clove, orange, myrrh, or frankincense. For our selection this would be the Cosy or Gingerbread Choice.
Lighting a candle isn't just about the scent; it's a way of saying, "I am present, and I am choosing to mark the turning of the year in this space."
4. Place Your Crystals
Now that your space is cleared and smelling amazing, you may want to maintain that feeling. This is where crystals come in.
For Samhain, some people like placing a few specific stones around the home:
- Black Obsidian: Combined with the tealight holder you can welcome in the season of Samhain with the relevant crystal and combine it with the light.
- Amethyst: For enhancing intuition and psychic awareness, helping to open your third eye and make the most of that thinning veil.
- Labradorite: Similar to Amethyst, this will help encourage psychic awareness as well as shielding your aura.
Some stones need more care than others when they live around the home. if your collection includes selenite or satin spar, keep those pieces dry and away from spills and damp surfaces. selenite vs satin spar: what's the actual difference? explains how to tell them apart and why gypsum should never meet water.
5. Set Your Samhain Intentions
The final step is all about you. Clearing your home is lovely, but taking time for quiet reflection is just as important.
Grab a notebook and sit somewhere comfortable and peaceful. Think about who and what has been meaningful over the past year, and what may now be finished rather than carried with you into the dark half of the year. Samhain is a traditional moment for remembering, reflecting, and marking the turning of the year.
You can even do a mini fire ritual. Write down one thing you want to release on a piece of paper, and safely burn it in a fireproof bowl using the flame from your Essential oil candle. Let the burning be a symbolic act of letting go.
