Samhain: A Beginner's Guide to the Pagan Holiday
Share
Let's take a look at one of the biggest thresholds of the year: Samhain.
If you’ve been noticing the last of the harvest coming in, the air shifting toward late autumn, or a natural urge to slow down and reflect on your year so far, you are likely already tuning in to the approach of Samhain. It marks the third and final harvest, the end of the light half of the year and the descent into the dark half.
We’re going to break down the history, the "why," and some super simple ways you can celebrate with the tools you probably already have.
What Exactly is Samhain?
Samhain is one of the four "Greater Sabbats", and one of the most important dates on the Pagan Wheel of the Year. Samhain is the third and final harvest or nuts, berries and root veg. It is the point at which the light half of the year gives way to the dark half. In the Northern Hemisphere, it is celebrated from the evening of 31 October into 1 November.
It’s a beautiful reminder that life is a cycle of balance. Samhain invites us to pause at the year's end, let go of what is finished, and honour what has come before.
Setting the Scene: Your Samhain Altar
One of the easiest ways to get into the Samhain spirit is by creating a small seasonal altar. Think of it as a focal point for remembrance during the year's turning. You can create this with just a few supplies that feel right for your personal practice at this time of year.

Samhain Correspondences
To shape a simple Samhain setup, try incorporating these colours and elements:
- Colours: Black, deep orange, russet red, purple, gold, and silver.
- Plants: Apples, pomegranates, pumpkins and squashes, mugwort, rosemary and sage
- Symbols: Candles, a place set for absent loved ones, apples, lanterns, the besom, and photographs or keepsakes of those who have passed.
- Herbs: Mugwort, rosemary, sage, thyme, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.
Using candles in black, orange, deep red, purple, gold or white and/or warming scents is a classic way to honour Samhain. Our Essential Oil Candles are perfect for this: they smell incredible and help set a focused, spiritual tone for your space.
Step-by-Step: A Simple Samhain Ritual
If you’re new to this, don’t overthink it.
1. Smoke Cleansing as Preparation
Before you start any spiritual work, it can help to tidy your space and make it feel ready for ritual. Open a window while you tidy, then, if smoke cleansing is part of your practice, bring that in as a mindful next step.

I love using Palo Santo for this. Light the end, let it burn for a few seconds, then blow it out and let the smoke waft through your room. While you do this, imagine any lingering heaviness or "gray" energy leaving through the open window.
2. A Candlelit Remembrance
Samhain is a meaningful time to pause and remember absent loved ones. Once your space is ready, sit comfortably with a piece of Rose Quartz and a candle nearby.

Many people like to include crystals in seasonal rituals as part of their personal practice and symbolism. Rose Quartz brings a soft pink tone that sits beautifully among candlelight, autumn leaves, and keepsakes on a Samhain altar. As a stone of love it also symbolises your love for your past ancestors. Hold the crystal in your hands and reflect on the people, memories, and chapters of the year you want to honour.
3. A Samhain Candle or Resin Offering
At Samhain, lighting a candle or a resin cup is a simple way to mark the turning of the year. If you’re looking for something special, our Organic Goodness Resins are a lovely choice, and Frankincense is another classic option for seasonal rituals.
Place the cup in a heat-safe dish, light a candle on your altar, and take a moment to reflect on the year's turning and what you are ready to leave behind.
A Quiet Autumn Evening Ritual
Samhain can be wonderfully simple. After your altar time or candle ritual, you might want to end the evening with a slower, more comforting routine at home.
A warm bath, a few minutes of stillness, and a balm applied slowly as part of your wind-down ritual can feel especially fitting at this time of year.
The Samhain Ritual Set
If you’d like to gather the same kinds of items for your own Samhain practice, I’ve pulled together a simple set of pieces that work beautifully for the season:
- Palo Santo for smoke cleansing as preparation. Its smooth pale wood and traditional ritual use make it a lovely starting point for setting your space.
- Organic Goodness Resin for the offering step. These are easy to place in a heat-proof vessel and bring a classic resin element to the ritual.
- Abalone Shell as a heat-proof vessel for the resin or palo santo. The shell’s iridescent inner surface makes it a beautiful practical piece for the altar.
- Handmade Essential Oil Candles are a wonderful way to bring in scent and light.
- Aura Cleansing Sprays for the atmosphere of the room. The scent profile feels rich and seasonal, with a ritual style that suits late autumn.
- Labradorite Freeform a dark stone with flashes of blue and gold and long-standing folklore associations. Their polished freeform shapes make them striking on an altar or shelf.
You can find these set up for you or buy them as a whole set for the season for £120 (a discount of £13.50 over buying them separately) on this page.
Why Celebrating Samhain Matters
You might be wondering, "Why bother with all this?"
In our modern, busy world, we often lose touch with the rhythm of the earth. We’re always "on," always working, always looking at screens. Taking time to acknowledge Samhain helps us slow down. It reminds us that we are part of nature, not separate from it.
As we head to this darker time of year we can see the signs of nature, in all it's forms, slowing down, taking rest and allowing itself to recharge before the summer. We are a part of nature and allowing space for these, gives us permission to do the same.
Samhain is a time to pause at the end of the harvest, remember those who have gone before, mark the turning of the year, and let go of what we don't want to bring forward. That makes it a powerful point in the calendar for reflection, remembrance, and intention.
